I've seen plenty of examples of anglo-Saxon pottery here in England (approx 7th-8th centuries AD) that bears swastikas, which were a symbolic form of 2 crossed serpents, regarded as a protective symbol.<br /><br />The word Swastika is Sanskrit for something like "all's well", and appears with this meaning in several Eastern religions, including Hinduism.
